Social, Moral, Spiritual and Cultural (SMSC) Provision at Goffs
At Goffs School our mission statement ‘Respect, Confidence & Achievement’ exemplifies our holistic approach to the importance of the development of every aspect of SMSC. Student experiences and curriculum ensure that our students are well rounded and conscientious individuals.
We aim to ensure:
- That the local and school community are aware of our values and principles
- A consistent approach to the delivery of SMSC issues through the curriculum and school life
- We know every student and ensure that their education is meaningful and appropriate to their age, aptitude and background
- That students have a good understanding of their responsibilities within Goffs community and how to exercise them
We recognise that the development of students, spiritually, morally, socially and culturally not only plays a crucial part both in our student’s ability to learn and achieve but in their ability to relate fully to the world we live in. All curriculum areas plan for and contribute to every student’s spiritual, moral, social and cultural development and opportunities. Through our curriculum we aim to provide an education that provides our students with the opportunity to explore and develop their own values, whilst recognising and accepting that those of others may differ.
We explore beliefs, spiritual awareness and ensure that high standards of personal behaviour including a positive caring attitude towards other people, an understanding of their social and cultural traditions and an appreciation of the diversity and richness of other cultures are all critical skills and dispositions that we nurture, encourage and develop through our school and community wide curriculum.
All students’ exhibit high standards of personal behaviour this includes showing a caring and positive attitude towards others and making an effort to understand the social and cultural traditions of others. The ability to learn from and appreciate the diversity and richness of other cultures are all critical skills that are nurtured and fostered within all our students across the school and community wide curriculum.
All staff model and promote socially responsible behaviour, treating all people as valuable individuals, showing respect and kindness to students, their families and the community. We ensure that students learn to differentiate between right and wrong in as far as their actions affect other people and encourage them to value themselves and others.
We promote the understanding of students’ rights and acceptance of their responsibilities and the need to respect the rights of others. Goffs School rules and Anti-Bullying systems promote responsible behaviour. All curriculum areas seek to use illustrations and examples drawn from as wide a range of cultural contexts as possible. This is reflected in the teacher's planning and learning resources.

Through Form time sessions (ATM), assemblies, Curriculum Enrichment Days and the wider community we provide students with the opportunity to:
- Share their achievements and successes with others
- Discuss personal experiences and feelings
- Express and explore their own ideas and beliefs
- Speak about difficult events, e.g. bullying, death etc
- Explore different relationships with friends/family/others
- Demonstrate empathy and consider the needs and behaviour of others
- Develop self-esteem and a respect for others
- Develop a sense of belonging
- Develop the skills and attitudes that enable children to develop socially, morally, spiritually and culturally e.g. empathy, respect, open-mindedness, sensitivity, critical awareness etc.

Practical activities to develop SMSC across the school will include:
- Working together in different groupings and situations
- Taking responsibility e.g. Subject Leaders, Student parliament, House Captains, leading assembly, Student Receptionist, Leadership Academy, Reading Buddies, Prom Committee, Lead Learners and Anti-Bullying Advocates.
- Encouraging teamwork in all group activities
- Showing appreciation of the performances of other children regardless of ability
- Meeting people from different cultures and countries
- Participation in a variety of different educational visits
- Participation in shows and performances
- Participation in Restorative Justice and community payback is a key part of our Behaviour for Learning Policy
- Use of assembly themes to explore important aspects of our heritage, other cultures and individual differences e.g. festival days, the Patron Saints, themed awareness and national celebrations
- Visits from writers, inspirational speakers & businesses and participating in workshops
- Opportunities for the students to visit the theatre and see live performances by professional actors, dancers and musicians
- Studying the contributions to society that certain famous, historical and influential people have made

Monitoring and evaluation
Provision for SMSC is monitored and reviewed on a regular basis via:
- Monitoring of teaching and learning and work scrutiny by HoDs/DoLs/SLT/Principal/ Governors
- Discussions and review at staff, SLT and Governors' meetings
- Audit of the school curriculum the school's approach to collective reflection
- Regular Student Voice
We firmly believe that the effective provision and delivery of a curriculum and wider curriculum that serves to accomplish all aspects of SMSC development, will ensure our students develop the skills they need to achieve success and fulfilment in life.
